When I was 19 years old, my mother told me that her grandfather repeatedly molested her the summer she stayed with him when she was 9 years old. This man was my great grandfather who I knew so well from photographs and family stories. I couldn’t believe that my own blood had assaulted my mother and I never knew. It took her my entire life to share this story with me. I’m so proud of her bravery to finally come forward and share her story and her resolve to empower others to do the same. Because sexual assault can happen in your own family by someone you trust and have been taught to love. Thank you to Rise Up and Shine for providing a platform for these stories to be to be told.
